What science does not know
Science measures sleep and consciousness ever better, from outside. But one question stays open, perhaps forever: why is there an inside? And at the wheel that inside is a darkness no sensor sees.
Science has learned a great deal about sleep and consciousness: it measures them, maps them, predicts them. But there is one question it has not answered, and perhaps never will: why is there an inside at all? Why does all that brain activity come with something it is like to feel?
What science can do, it does well. With a brief magnetic pulse and EEG we get an index of consciousness, high in waking and dreaming, low in deep sleep (Casali and colleagues, 2013). It measures the level from outside, maps the correlates, predicts the states. Real progress, and no small thing.
But a gap remains that does not close. Measuring the correlates is not explaining the experience. Why should that activity come with a felt inside, rather than with nothing? David Chalmers called it the hard problem: the easy problems - how the brain processes, attends, reports - are difficult but tractable; the hard one is why there is experience at all (Chalmers, 1995).

"we do not know and we shall not know." The physiologist said it of the limits of natural science, precisely about consciousness. A century and a half later, the question is still there.
Thomas Nagel turned it into an image. Even with the complete physical description of a bat's brain, we would not know what it is like to be a bat: the subjective character of experience escapes the objective account (Nagel, 1974). The inside is reached only from inside.
This is not surrender, it is honesty. A science that knows its edges is more trustworthy than one that promises too much. We tell the science, and also where it ends.
And the road? Sleepiness we measure from outside: reaction times, EEG, the circadian rhythm, biomarkers. Real and useful things. But the lived instant in which a driver slips into sleep is a first-person darkness no sensor sees from outside. The instruments can say "the risk is high"; they cannot be inside the second the world goes out. That is why noticing matters, and why prevention comes before prosecution: that threshold, in the end, is crossed alone.
Sleep we measure from outside. The moment it takes you, we do not.
That border is crossed by one person, and no instrument is inside with them.
The honest map has an edge. On the road, that edge is exactly where care begins.
