The Threshold
Between waking and sleep there is a border. Science measures it, cultures have told stories about it, and every night we cross it. By day, at the wheel, that same border has another name: sleepiness.

There is a thin line between being awake and not being awake. It is not a switch, it is a passage. The brain does not shut off when we sleep, it changes shape. And that same shifting shape, by day and with open eyes, is what we study at Drive Awake: vigilance giving way behind the wheel.
Here we look at that border from several sides. From science, which now measures it with new tools. From restorative practices, which learn to inhabit it in order to recover. From cultures, which mapped it long before us, as a landscape of states rather than a void. From myths, which made it liveable with a story.
We do not hand science down from above, and we do not chase common belief from below. We set the voices on the same level and always bring them back to the road. Because understanding the threshold, through whichever door you enter, is a way to drive more awake.
Two doors, one threshold
Lucid dreaming and dream yoga enter the same state of mind, for opposite reasons.
LiveRest without sleep
Yoga nidra and NSDR: what they restore and what they do not.
LiveConsciousness with open eyes
Local sleep and microsleeps: consciousness does not switch off, it shifts - and at the wheel it splits.
LiveThe four states
From the Mandukya to the neuroscience of consciousness. Is deep sleep empty?
LiveThe brother of death
The mythology of sleep: Hypnos and Thanatos, incubation, the dream as message.
LiveWhat happens when we meditate
Monks and EEG: gamma synchrony, a changing cortex. Consciousness can be trained.
LiveWhere we go when we fall asleep
The hypnagogic state, memory being sorted, a world being built. We do not switch off, we depart.
LiveWhat science does not know
We measure consciousness from outside, but why there is an inside stays open. And at the wheel that instant is a darkness.
