Lost sleep doesn't simply go away. You get it back by sleeping, not by driving.

One in the morning on the Leventina valley road, a car going by now and then. At this hour people often count on catching up at the weekend. Van Dongen and colleagues held 48 healthy adults to four, six or eight hours of sleep for fourteen nights: on six hours, their errors ended up matching those after two nights without sleep. Meanwhile the sleepiness they reported rose early on and then barely moved. So the debt grows without making itself felt, and it can be measured before it is felt. It is paid back by sleeping, before setting off.

What helps

Sleep debt is not felt, so it is counted: the hours slept over the week say more than how you feel right now. In the study, reported sleepiness stopped rising while performance kept falling. It is recovered by sleeping, and the trip moves to after the sleep, not after the coffee.

Anyone still awake plans to catch up on sleep during the weekend. But the debt starts tonight.

Whoever is still at the wheel is counting on catching up at the weekend. The sleep debt, though, starts building tonight.

0:17 · Two weeks

Six hours a night for two weeks: by the end, the mistakes match those after two nights without sleep.

Van Dongen and colleagues, 2003: 48 healthy adults aged 21 to 38, held to four, six or eight hours of sleep for fourteen consecutive nights. Those on six hours ended up making as many errors as after two nights without sleep.

And you don't even notice. You barely feel any sleepier than you did on day one.

In the same study, self-reported sleepiness rose at first and then stayed almost flat while performance kept falling. The deficit grows without announcing itself.

That's why the debt builds before you feel it. It doesn't wait for the weekend.

That is why the debt shows in the driving before it shows in the driver: the road measures it before the feeling does.
