Five in the afternoon on the Simplon road: the drive home begins, and everyone carries the day they have just spent.

The sleep you lost is what makes you drift. Sleep before the next drive.
It is five in the afternoon and on the Simplon road the drive home begins. The drive is short, known by heart, and it looks like the easiest part of the day. A study run on an open motorway says otherwise: twenty-two drivers covered a thousand kilometres in five sessions of a hundred and five minutes, once after a normal night and once after a restricted one. After sleep restriction there were 535 line crossings, against 66. What predicted the crossings was the sleepiness reported before each session, not the feeling of being worn out: two measures that do not coincide. They had been awake eight hours and the stints were short. One short night had been enough.

A short drive is no protection: in the study, a hundred and five minutes after a restricted night were enough. If the night was short, the drive home is the moment to get a lift, or to wait twenty minutes before setting off. And what warns you is not tiredness, it is sleepiness: two different things that feel different.

It took neither a sleepless night nor a long journey: eight hours awake and stints of a hundred and five minutes, and the drop was already there.
