Sleep after a night shift isn't a reward. It comes first.

At 5 am, a night shift ends. For the body, the night is not over. Night workers sleep by day, and daytime sleep is shorter. Behind the wheel, two things add up: the body's lowest hour and the sleep that is missing. After the last night shift, sleepiness carries on into the days off. Night work puts alertness to the test: it is not a lack of will, but a body clock that no roster moves.

What helps

Daytime sleep is protected like night sleep: dark, quiet, phone off. Anyone finishing a shift with a drive still ahead can sleep before taking the wheel, even briefly. After the last night shift recovery is not immediate: the first days off are still days of sleepiness.

The video explained

5 scenes, with notes and sources
0:00 · The forecourt

At 5 am, a night shift ends. But the body still thinks it's night.

The night shift ends while the body clock is still in its night: alertness is close to the 4 a.m. minimum. The forecourt is empty, the body is not.

0:07 · Daytime sleep

Night workers sleep by day. And that sleep is shorter.

Sleeping by day means sleeping against the internal clock: sleep breaks off earlier. The two reviews cited report shorter daytime sleep without giving its exact length.

Two things · 0:14
0:14 · Two things

Behind the wheel, two things build up: the body's natural low point and the sleep you've missed.

Sleepiness has two sources: the time of day and the hours spent without sleep. At 5, after a night at work and a short daytime sleep, both are active.

0:23 · The two nights

After the last night shift, sleepiness can linger into your days off.

Akerstedt 2003 lists among the acute symptoms of night work the sleepiness during working hours that continues into successive days off. How many nights it takes to return to usual levels is not in that source.

0:30 · The person

Night work puts your alertness to the test. It's not about willpower. Your body clock doesn't follow the rota.

It is neither inattention nor lack of will: it is the body clock, which no work schedule can move. Night workers keep everyone else going; their sleep deserves protection.

The corrections made to this text, with their date, their reason and the lines they touched.

  1. 16.09.2026Two-engine blind test, with a calibration set

Four loan translations, in Italian, German and French

The lines of every hour online went past two judges with no context, mixed in with certified sentences written by native speakers. Only the four whose reason names a mistake anyone can check were applied: «piu tempo prende il viaggio» was a loan translation of «it takes time»; «non e poca volonta» is ungrammatical; the German talked around «Nachtschicht», a word the same episode already uses twice; in French «le total» is arithmetic and follows nobody to bed.

Lines touched IT line 5, DE line 6

  2. 17.09.2026Cross-comparison test, two judges

The night shift had five names

In the 5 am episode the same thing went by five names: turno di notte, notte di lavoro, notte al lavoro, and in French nuit de travail where poste de nuit exists. German said Nachtschicht throughout and was the only consistent one. All four languages now use the name of the shift where the shift is what is meant. Anyone reading two episodes in a row does not have to wonder whether it is the same thing.

Lines touched IT line 4, IT line 6, FR line 1, FR line 4, FR line 6, EN line 6

  3. 17.09.2026Check of the plate measurements

Six lines did not fit the plate

Every line has a limit: three plate lines, four for the closing line. Six were over, and on screen the text runs out of frame or shrinks. In the closing line of hour 09 the words «if you're sleepy» were dropped: they contradicted the line before, which says that after a coffee you FEEL awake and the sleep is only covered. Waiting until you feel sleepy is exactly what does not work. «Pull over» on its own is truer, and all four languages fit.

Lines touched FR line 5, DE line 5

Reported, not yet resolved

  • FR line 1 The third engine called «poste de nuit» a loan translation. Checked: that is wrong, «poste de nuit» is correct, attested French. But in Swiss official documents (SECO, SUVA) the term is «equipe de nuit». Not a mistake, a register: whether to speak like the Swiss employer or like the dictionary.
