Sleep is not a passive state. It is biological work that restores attention, memory and readiness. When a disorder shortens it, fragments it or shifts it out of phase, that work stays unfinished. The bill is paid by day, while awake.
At the wheel, missing sleep becomes sleepiness: it slows the gaze, lengthens reaction times, opens the door to microsleeps. Different disorders all reach the same point - vigilance giving way while driving. That is why we read them together, not as isolated cases.
They can be read in families. The cause varies - too little sleep, fragmented sleep, sleep at the wrong time, sleep that invades the day, behaviours during sleep - but the destination is shared: daytime sleepiness. Five roads, one risk.

Insomnia
Persistent difficulty falling or staying asleep, or non-restorative sleep, despite adequate time and conditions. The most common sleep disorder worldwide.

Staying awake beyond the normal builds an immediate sleep debt. It is not an illness: it is the most common condition behind sleepiness at the wheel, and the most underestimated.
Sleep is there but breaks apart. Apnoea and nocturnal movements shatter rest without full waking.
Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
Repeated interruptions of breathing during sleep, caused by partial or total obstruction of the upper airway. Often undiagnosed for years.

An irresistible urge to move the legs, worse in the evening and at rest, that delays falling asleep and fragments the night.
Nocturnal · UnderdiagnosedPeriodic Limb Movement Disorder
Repetitive, rhythmic limb movements during sleep that trigger micro-arousals, often without the person noticing.

The chronic conflict between the biological clock and modern schedules. Work, school, artificial light and technology can profoundly alter circadian rhythms.
