Sleep Medicine - EOC

The EOC Sleep Medicine Service studies, measures and treats sleep disorders. Here sleepiness is not an impression: it is something you can measure.

Who they are

The Sleep Medicine Service is part of the Institute of Clinical Neurosciences of Southern Switzerland (INCSI), with sites in Bellinzona and Lugano. It is a centre certified by the Swiss Society for Sleep Research, Sleep Medicine and Chronobiology, and one of two European centres of excellence for restless legs syndrome. The reference is Prof. Mauro Manconi, deputy chief physician and scientific coordinator of Drive Awake. Their principle is simple: sleep better to live better.

What they treat and study

They care for sleep disorders at every age, with active clinical research:

From the clinic to the road

Measuring wakefulness

Sleepiness can be measured

In the clinic, daytime sleepiness is quantified with the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), and the ability to stay awake with the Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) - a test also indicated for driving vehicles safely. This is where Drive Awake begins: sleepiness is not an opinion, it is a measure. And what can be measured can be prevented.

The people

How they connect to us

EOC measures and treats sleepiness inside the clinic. Drive Awake takes it outside: into culture, into story, onto the road. Their chronobiology counselling for night work speaks our language, the language of alertness and circadian rhythm. Same direction: to understand before judging, to prevent before blame.
