Who they are
The Sleep Medicine Service is part of the Institute of Clinical Neurosciences of Southern Switzerland (INCSI), with sites in Bellinzona and Lugano. It is a centre certified by the Swiss Society for Sleep Research, Sleep Medicine and Chronobiology, and one of two European centres of excellence for restless legs syndrome. Our contact is Prof. Mauro Manconi, deputy chief physician, scientific coordinator of the World Sleep Forum and Drive Awake's scientific partner from the start. Their principle is simple: sleep better to live better.
What they treat and study
They care for sleep disorders at every age, with active clinical research:
- Insomnia and difficulty falling asleep.
- Sleep-related breathing disorders and snoring (obstructive apnoea).
- Restless legs syndrome and sleep-related movement disorders.
- Circadian rhythm disorders: jet lag, shift work, advanced or delayed sleep phases.
- Parasomnias: sleepwalking, night terrors, REM sleep behaviour disorder.
- Narcolepsy and central hypersomnias, with excessive daytime sleepiness.
- Sleep disorders in children.

Measuring wakefulness
Sleepiness can be measured
In the clinic, daytime sleepiness is quantified with the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), and the ability to stay awake with the Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) - a test also indicated for driving vehicles safely. This is where Drive Awake begins: sleepiness is not an opinion, it is a measure. And what can be measured can be prevented.
