The night shift

Watch in ITFRDEEN

After a night at work, sleep is not a reward. It comes first.

At 5, a night shift ends. For the body, the night is not over. Night workers sleep by day, and daytime sleep is shorter: 2 to 4 hours less. Behind the wheel, two things add up: the body's lowest hour and the sleep that is missing. After the last night shift it takes two nights of sleep to get back to normal. Night workers are not less attentive: their body clock simply follows no roster.

The video explained

0:00 · The forecourt

At 5, a night shift ends. For the body, the night is not over.

The night shift ends while the body clock is still in its night: alertness is close to the 4 a.m. minimum. The forecourt is empty, the body is not.

0:07 · Daytime sleep

Night workers sleep by day. And daytime sleep is shorter: 2 to 4 hours less.

Sleeping by day means sleeping against the body clock: sleep breaks off earlier. In EEG studies, sleep after a night shift is 2 to 4 hours shorter.

0:14 · Two things

Behind the wheel, two things add up: the body's lowest hour and the sleep that is missing.

Sleepiness has two sources: the time of day and the hours spent without sleep. At 5, after a night at work and a short daytime sleep, both are active.

0:20 · The two nights

After the last night shift it takes two nights of sleep to get back to normal.

The sleepiness built up over the shifts does not vanish with one night's sleep: it usually takes two nights to return to usual levels. Days off carry the trace too.

Night workers are not less attentive. Their body clock follows no roster.

It is neither inattention nor lack of will: it is the body clock, which no work schedule can move. Night workers keep everyone else going; their sleep deserves protection.
